Convert Image

An image format converter changes an image from one format to another — JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, or GIF — so it works in the specific platform, app, or pipeline that requires that format. VisualDocs handles all six formats for both input and output, with transparency-aware background fills for formats that do not support alpha. All conversion uses the browser's Canvas API, so nothing is uploaded to any server.

Format conversion solves compatibility and efficiency problems: WebP and AVIF are 25 to 50 percent smaller than JPEG at the same quality (ideal for web), PNG preserves transparency (essential for logos and graphics), and JPEG offers maximum compatibility (email, older apps). Converting a transparent PNG to JPEG fills the transparent areas with a background color (default white) so the result looks correct rather than showing black or missing pixels.

The tool supports batch conversion — upload multiple images and convert them all to the same target format in one pass, which is far faster than converting files one at a time. AVIF output requires a modern browser (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+), but input AVIF is widely supported, so you can read AVIF sources and output to more compatible formats when needed.

The conversion pipeline draws the source image onto a Canvas element and exports via toBlob in the target format, which means the browser's native encoder handles the actual compression, guaranteeing standards-compliant output that opens in every image viewer. When converting from a transparent PNG or WebP to JPEG or BMP, the tool fills the alpha channel with a configurable background color because those formats lack alpha support, and the default white fill prevents the ugly black backgrounds that raw conversion would produce. Animated GIFs are flattened to their first frame during conversion since the Canvas API does not preserve animation frames, so if you need to keep animation, convert to a format that supports it or keep the original GIF alongside the converted still.
